Reading Room – March 2010 Reading

In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day I plan to read the following books for the month of March:

What a great book to read this month.  It centers around a young doctor straight out of medical school.  He joins a country practice and a very interesting seasoned doctor by the name of Fingal Flahertie O’Reilly.  This reminds me of the James Herriot series, but instead of animals as the patients they are very special residents of the town of Ballybucklebo.  Do check out this trailer (I will be adding Patrick Taylor’s other books to my to-read list):

Do you have other St. Patrick’s Day suggestions?

  1. I recommend “Galway Bay” by Mary Pat Kelly. It received 5 stars (48 reviews) on Amazon, and is available for Kindle.

Note from Adele – Sorry, I’d like to add the image, but it gets stripped out upon publication.

  2. After finishing “An Irish Country Doctor” I thought I’d start on the “Princes of Ireland”, but then realized it is over 800 pages – I think I’ll save that for an audio book. Then I went to order “Galway Bay” based on Nancy’s recommendation but found it is over $14.00 for the Kindle version – I tagged that as a 9.99 boycott and put it on my price watch list for purchase when/if the price comes down. So upon further searches for a good March read, I found Ireland – so I will start on that 600+ pages and try to finish by end of March.

  3. I finished reading “Ireland” -
I found this book enjoyable and educational. It centers around a Storyteller who travels the countryside of Ireland sharing his stories about his country, and a young man whose life is changed by this man.

The book is full of stories, told by the Storyteller and others. I don’t know if it was my imagination but it seemed to me that the tone of the stories told changed depending on who recalled it. The master was the Storyteller himself, the others just didn’t hold up to his techniques and ability. I found this very interesting and reflected the talent of the author.

  4. For my last March Theme reading I will read “True Irish Ghost Stories”.

Just finished it – This book is a collection of stories that were provided to the author by way of a “want ad” listed in a newspaper. These stories took place in Ireland back in the time span of about 1776 to 1910. I found some of the accounts interesting, others not so much.

That concludes my reading of Irish theme books for the month of March.
