Reading Room – April 2010 Reading

I have on my list of “To-Read” for April (Easter theme) – At Home With Beatrix Potter-The Creator of Peter Rabbit by Susan Denyer.  I normally read the Kindle version of books, but for this one I have the hardback because it is full of beautiful photographs and drawings.

Then completely off theme for Easter, I am currently reading Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane.

I also plan to include Final Passage by  Timothy J. Fost.  This is available on Kindle for $0.99.  It’s about – “Martin Lancaster is a man haunted by his past and still traumatized by the loss of his father on a solo yacht race. Years later he stumbles upon evidence which suggests that his father’s death was no accident.”

  1. I just finished reading “Shutter Island” – definitely a page turner and includes an interesting ending. There are many reviews for this book on Amazon. I’ll add the story was not what I expected, it was better.

Next book to read – “At Home With Beatrix Potter”.

Update – I finished “At Home With Beatrix Potter” – I enjoyed this book, especially the photography and illustrations. Beatrix was a very talented and brave women. It was interesting to read about the women behind the lovely children’s books.

I’m afraid I couldn’t finish “Final Passage”, I found editing mishaps that distracted me from the story. I may try again later though because the description does sound interesting.

The next book on my reading list was “The Afflicted Girls”, but I’m afraid I was not able to “get into” this book. Note: There are somewhat explicit sex/rape scenes. I’m not stating whether that is good or bad, just a warning. I did not expect that for this book.

I am now reading “Saving Sailor : A Quirky Girl, A Faithful Dog, andOne Unforgettable Summer” by A.J..

  2. “Saving Sailor” by A.J. – I enjoyed reading this book. I thought the author did a great job expressing the thoughts of a 10-year old girl as she and her very close knit family spent a carefree summer on an Idaho island in 1968. It was fun to feel like you were there, either drifting in the row boat or partaking in the summer evening outdoor family gatherings. A little like the movie “Christmas Story”, this time it is narrated by a young girl and the setting is a family summer vacation. A nice book to “escape into”.

  3. “Recollections: A Baby Boomer’s Memories of the Fabulous Fifties” by Jim Chambers – This was a fun book to read. Even though technically I was only two years old in the ’50′s, much of what was discussed was also around in the early ’60′s. Jim Chambers brought up many things I had long forgotten – it was nice to take that trip back and revisit that time. I recommend this book to those who lived it and those who would like to know “what it was like”.
